It got me thinking (and this might just be because most of my other classes are in anthropology right now) about the ancient Greek beliefs regarding the afterlife and what that indicated about their society. For the most part, it seems like cultures develop perspectives on life (or lack thereof) after death that comfort or reassure them in some way. So why did the Greeks intentionally hold onto the belief that life would be gloomy and unfulfilling after death? It seems like they would have been more likely to believe that death was the end.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"42308840","body":"Not all cultures do have comforting views of the afterlife. It's almost like Homer is taking a moment out of this awful account of Odysseus' trials and reminding the reader that life is so precious and valuable. That makes Odysseus even more of a hero, because, like you said, it would be so easy at this point to just give up and float around in the Underworld, but the god of the Underworld makes that comment and it's almost like a reality check. If I was Odysseus I might think, "Oh yea, life is valuable in and of itself. If even this god would rather be a living slave than dead, I should really take advantage of this life that is still mine, despite what I've gone through." I don't know how good of a "booster" that would be after everything, but at least it would be a better realization than nothing.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42071998","dateCreated":"1315361823","smartDate":"Sep 6, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"mscothartman","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/mscothartman","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1282414428\/mscothartman-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/bsuhonorshum.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42071998"},"dateDigested":1532652730,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"odyssey","description":"You're right.
