\nI was struck by your observation that the female characters of The Odyssey break away from the habitual obedience stereotypically attributed to "respectable" women. I hadn't really considered this particular attribute of the women in this epic, but now that you mention it, I recognize it clearly. The first example that comes to mind is Athena, who consciously goes against the consensus of other gods- particularly Zeus and Poseidon, her father and uncle- in her actions on behalf of Odysseus and others within her favor. Penelope also goes against the leanings of authorities of the time when she demonstrates her aversion to remarriage, even marriage to the sons of the respected elders and authorities of Ithaca.
