I think that the problem is that we forced it into a medium which it was never designed for. It wasn't something I had really thought of before, but between opening the bag of wind, slaughtering Helios' cows, and having to go all the way back to Circe's island to bury one guy, they do tend to do there fair share of causing delays for this whole journey.  Maybe that was done on purpose though.  Maybe it was just used for comparison?  Like, hey, these guys really aren't that bright, but look at Odysseus!  Isn't he clever?
