The purpose of the weekly responses is twofold: 1) to extend your thinking and discussion of the week's material beyond the class period, and 2) to share your thinking with the class.
ASSIGNMENT
You are required to write a weekly response to the week's reading and/or discussion, due by 11:59 p.m. Friday evening, submitted on the wiki. Include your last name in the filename of your document.
Each response should be about 300 words long. You can write about anything we've read or discussed in class during the week. Perhaps you want to respond to something that came up in class discussion, or you had something to say but didn't get a chance to say it. Or maybe you thought of the perfect comment as you were walking out the door. The response is a place to continue the thinking that we begin in class. The response can also provide a way for those who don't talk a lot in class to show their participation.
Weekly responses can take any form. They can be fragmented, questioning, irreverent, speculative. They can make an argument. They can try out half-formed thoughts or half-baked ideas. They can throw out ideas for an essay or presentation. The only requirements are that they respond to the content of the class and in some way communicate your thinking.
The responses are posted to the wiki so that they are public. Feel free to browse through them and read your classmate's responses. Please don't feel that you are invading another student's privacy by reading her or his writing on the wiki. The purpose of using the wiki is to share.
EVALUATION
Each week I will read your responses and evaluate them as complete or incomplete. A response that meets the above requires and is submitted on time will receive 100 points. A nonresponse will receive 0 points. A late or inadequate response may receive fewer points (usually 70). Missed responses can be made up for 50 points. Although I won't write responses to your weekly writing, I will be happy to talk to you about anything you write. I will respond if you ask for response to a particular question.
