I will start off by saying that I greatly enjoyed my visit to the Ball State Art Museum. I had never realized before that our campus had such great art in it… From famous people as well! As soon as you walk into the building, you feel welcome. There are some statues in the main room, but not so many that they cause you to become uncomfortable. The walls are painted white in order to not detract from the artwork. The dark sculptures stand out against the white, making it very easy to study the details of the art. The light is not too harsh, allowing enough light to view the objects, but not so much that it becomes blinding. The entire environment is very calming and relaxed, making me feel welcome in the building and not as if I were an intruder.
I would say that the museum’s highlights are it’s numerous paintings as well as its artifacts from Africa. I assumed that this is the case because these exhibits were so placed that those two seemed to have prevalence. I like that all of the art is interspersed. Especially in the painting exhibit, modern works were mixed in with more classic works. I like this and it makes me think that these were intentionally put this way… Maybe the museum curators are trying to tell us that classic works and modern works are all connected to each other, and it is impossible for one not to have aspects of the other. Modern works have so much classic influence in them that it is very easy to combine the two.
